I ran large capacity leather saddle bags for three years on my Savage without supports. I never had a problem but I did worry about one of them getting sucked into the rear wheel drive assembly while I was on the road. Also, the saddle bags over time rubbed against the rear fender and chrome frame covers and left scuff marks in the paint. If I do it again, I will get the supports for peace of mind. You should look for supports at Salvage yards. You can get them for much cheaper and no one will see them anyway.
